2015 Australian Institute of Architects Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Awards
Tonight marks the 2015 Australian Institute of Architects Darling Downs/West Moreton Regional Awards ceremony in Toowoomba. Fulton trotter Architects have two projects in the running; Faith Lutheran College Year 7 Learning Centre and Chinchilla Christian School.
The Faith Lutheran College Year 7 Learning centre was completed in 2014 in preparation for state’s decision to incorporate year 7 into high schools in 2015.
The new building at Faith Lutheran College has been designed to create a welcoming environment for the new stream of college students and completes the establishment of the middle school for the campus. The placement of the building within the existing college planning aims to facilitate the transition from primary to high school life.
The arrangement of spaces within the building aims to enhance and support the educational experience of the young students. The brief called for rooms to allow for a variety of teaching and learning methods from team teaching, to large group instruction and small withdrawal groups. The ability for learning to occur outside was also given a strong emphasis in order to ensure that the new students at the school continue to feel increasingly comfortable being immersed in the overall campus. The building and environs are for the exclusive use of Year 7 students.

Chinchilla Christian School is a co-educational independent primary school, with a strong philosophy ensuring that a Christian based education is provided for families within and surrounding the region of Chinchilla.
The site is located on the north side of the Warrego Highway, and sits within a residential and rural context that is also located within the heart of watermelon country and sandy loam ground conditions.
The site planning principal was developed along the idea that buildings (classrooms) should be arranged along a weaving path, like a watermelon vine. The weaving line travels through the site, commencing from the entry building and making its way to the last classroom building.
