Calvary Christian College Technology Centre - AIA North Queensland Regional Architecture Awards
Calvary Christian College Technology Centre designed by Fulton Trotter Architects is a contender in tonight’s Australian Institute of Architects North Queensland Regional Architecture awards ceremony.
The Technology Centre design responds to the north Queensland tropical climate. This is reflected in the large eaves, natural ventilation, excellent outdoor/indoor relationships and screening elements to the west, which helps respond to the hot afternoon sun.
The building is naturally lit from the east and the south facades, with pockets of high level glazing to the north to service the scale of the generous ceiling heights. The exposed steel columns, beams, mechanical ductwork and naturally finished timber trusses are strong visual elements, which make reference to the industrial aesthetic and functionality of the Technology Centre.
Colour has been used as a unifying element between the primary and secondary schools, highlighting the ‘Calvary Christian College’ colours and picking up on some of the existing colours from the primary school. This philosophy will be continued in future development on the site in efforts to create a unified image.
