Miles Health Service Redevelopment Commendation
Fulton Trotter Architects’ first commendation for 2010 was announced at the annual Australian Institute of Architects’ awards dinner at Toowoomba for the Darling Downs region.
The recipient, Miles Health Service Redevelopment, completed 2008, successfully received a regional commendation which we hope is just the beginning of our annual awards for 2010. Director, Paul Trotter and Senior Associate, John Hay attended the dinner to receive the award and were very proud of their accomplishment. This will be Fulton Trotter Architects’ tenth award for the Darling Downs region in the past 15 years, previous recent winners have been the Chinchilla Aquatic Centre, Chinchilla Cultural Centre, Dogwood Crossing @ Miles and Emerald Aquatic Centre.
The new Miles Health Service Facility is a state of the art Rural Health Service building with the communities general health needs provided on one integrated campus. The new and refurbished facilities include a Hospital with Emergency facilities and Acute Beds along with an Aged Care Facility and Primary Health Clinic.
The project was developed on the same site as the old hospital building that was dilapidated and beyond reasonable repair, but loved by the community. Our response was to design a building that shared some of the qualities of the old art deco building and through the retention of some key elements of the old hospital.
The project provided many design challenges including a major decanting strategy to allow for the staged redevelopment of the campus and a complete re-orientation of the new facility to face east instead of south. The new buildings function highly efficiently as a health service and also suit the differing needs of aged care. Entrances and access to Emergency and Primary Health are obvious and intuitive and the internal environment is warm and inviting despite the need to create a good quality clinical environment.
Congratulations to the team involved in this project.
