Official opening of the Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre

The highly anticipated opening of the Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre drew large crowds on the weekend with the community flocking to appraise the new facilities.

The state of the art aquatic centre is home to an Olympic sized swimming pool and undercover learn-to-swim pool. The facilities included a new club, amenities, control and plant building as well as the refurbishment of the existing indoor sports centre to create an all-round fitness facility for the Lockyer Valley community.

Fulton Trotter Architects were engaged to develop and oversee the master plan for the complex in consultation with the Lockyer Valley Regional Council. The design of the pools and aquatic equipment were by J.H. Cockerell Engineers.

The facility was officially opened to the public by Lockyer Valley Major Steve Jones with a guest appearance by Olympic swimming champion Cate Campbell and Australia’s Strongest man “The Island Warrior” Derek Boyer. The free family fun day included a speech by Cate Campbell and a competitive swimming a lap against a member of the public while Derek Boyer provided strength demonstrations for the eager crowd. The kids were also catered for with an inflatable water slide and large Zorb balls!

“Building openings are a wonderful opportunity for the celebration of an achievement by all concerned, from our client Lockyer Valley Regional Council, to the design team and also for visitors for the first time to the new centre.” John Hay, Senior Associate at Fulton Trotter Architects.

“Gatton Aquatic Centre was no exception with the opening held last Saturday, however, to see so many smiling faces of children enjoying the cooling water of the new aquatic centre just added to the finishing touches to the celebrations. To finally see the completed construction of all buildings, from the original design sketches prepared some 3 years ago and with so many people using the facilities at the opening was uplifting.”

Fulton Trotter Architects had pleasure in working with the Lockyer Valley Regional Council and we hope the community enjoy their facility in years to come!
