The End of an Era – 96 Astor Terrace bites the dust!
Early this morning demolition started on Fulton Trotter Architect’s previous home at 96 Astor Terrace Spring Hill after 60 years.
In the early 1960s Fulton Job Collin moved into the building designed by Stephen E. Trotter with the assistance of Jack Gilmour for 30 years before briefly taking residence a few doors down. In 2001 Fulton Trotter and Partners moved back to a newly refurbished 96 Astor Terrace before relocating in 2011 to their current premises.
The building was a classic 1960’s modernist building that had been preserved over time. The building underwent renovations internally in 2000 but still preserved its original curtain wall system and aquamarine panels that have been untouched since they were installed. Similarly the external red brickwork remained original without painting or rendering.
The building demonstrates great significance to many current and past employees of Fulton Trotter Architects where numerous young architects, and current directors Paul and Mark Trotter, Greg Isaac and Andrew Armstrong were trained since the 1960’s. The building also housed the design and documentation of many renowned and award winning buildings as well as cherished memories that will last forever.
The building was nominated for heritage listing which was unsuccessful despite the support of many Brisbane architects. Fortunately we had undoubtedly outgrown the ‘old lady’ and our new premises in Portman Lane supports our growing practice in more spacious surrounds (although we seem to be filling this building with people fast!)
So what is the silver lining? The practice continues to thrive despite harsh economic conditions and our traditions, great design and service continue with the third generation of directors.
Long live Fulton Trotter Architects and thank you to our many clients, architects, consultants and builders who continue to support this practice.
