Emerald Hospital
Emerald Queensland
Emerald Hospital is comprised of a substantial two-storey mid 1950’s brick, main building, a similar nurses’ quarters building and some outbuildings of lesser significance.
Internally, new uses have resulted in a modernising of the finishes, colours and proportions of the various spaces. The new single level building to the north reflects the original plan form and elevation to the street. This emphasises the entrance ensuring minimum confusion of the public. The ambulance / emergency entrance is emphasised for similar reasons. The new building, replicating the plan shape of the old structure, was constructed using modern, more technical materials, which reflect the advance of technology in both building and medicine.
Colours have been drawn from the natural landscape and the town’s name makes several cameo appearances. Single level stores and hotel service structures to the west take on more technical ‘western shed’ type aesthetics, in recognition of their non-habitable function.
