International House Extension
Fulton Trotter Moss were commissioned by International House within the University of Queensland to design a student residential development which was to extend the capacity of the existing college from 150 students to 178 with a further two accommodation towers. Stephen Trotter had designed the existing college with Frank Moss (Fulton Trotter Moss) over a period between the early sixties to the early eighties. While the earlier buildings have not been recognised architecturally they are fine examples for their era.
The unique planning/tower concept has stood the test of time with students and college representatives very happy with the current tower design which ensures all bedrooms had adequate cross ventilation. The tower approach provides light and air throughout the campus with students contained in a family environment of four to a floor sharing bathroom facilities. All bedrooms have windows on two of the four walls providing excellent ventilation.
This existing arrangement not only made the bedrooms and college very desirable places to live, but also provided a unique identity to all of the existing colleges at University. The challenge was to create buildings that had a similar character and feel but were distinctly modern and updated in terms of amenities and look
