Lockyer Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre
The Lockyer Valley Sports & Aquatic Centre is a community facility that’s design is sympathetic to the Eastern streetscape. Utilitarian buildings and structures: kiosk, outdoor dining, amenities, clubhouse, learn-to-swim pool, 50m pool and associated buildings, have a scale that is appropriate for location. The new centre replaces an existing centre located on another site in Gatton that had passed its use by date. The realisation of the project was driven by the devastation experienced within the Lockyer Valley Region during the 2011 January floods.
The architects worked in close collaboration with the pool engineer to ensure that the pool structures and associated buildings provided efficient water treatment service routes, the pool and building layouts were designed in accordance to the design code guidelines and building-relationships were well-considered for users.
Four main groups were required to be collaborated and consulted with throughout the project. Each had its own set of objectives. The council required a pool that would have low ongoing future costs. The Lessee required a low maintenance facility with good sightlines for supervision. The swim club needed to run its activities separate to the pool lessee, whist the public required a pleasant, welcoming facility that is safe to use.
