Mt St Patrick College + Primary School
Murwillumbah New South Wales
The redevelopment of Mount Saint Patrick College and Primary School was an opportunity to upgrade existing site services and infrastructure and integrate modern teaching facilities. Several of the older existing buildings on site were constructed in the early 1900’s.
The main intent of the design was to provide cohesion and to create a recognisable identity for the campus.
The existing church and convent were chosen as focal points, the Convent being refurbished and retro-fitted as the College Administration Building. The new buildings were grouped to provide covered circulation between all buildings and the main axes were oriented to flow down the steep site from the convent and church, which form the pinnacles of the site. Spaces between buildings have been turned into useable informal and formal assembly areas. Steeply pitched red roofs were used to tie in with the roof forms of the convent and church. All new buildings have solid brick end walls which take their reference in colour and form from the existing classroom blocks and glazed red bricks were used to proved a reference to the church buildings. The side elevations of the new buildings are curtain glazed, taking reference from other classroom block.
