Our Lady of the Southern Cross College Library & Hall

The original multipurpose hall at the Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby dominates the front of the school with a large flat high wall and clumsy attachments. By building the new library and entry structure on the east, the mass of the existing was hidden or broken down in scale. The existing roof profile and pitches of the hall were respectfully followed to visually tie the building forms and overall composition together. By stepping the roofs down, breaks in the roof were created, providing a high level natural lighting deep into the floor plan. Generous ceiling heights in the main body of the library were used to create an inviting space and provide a high sense of visual amenity.

Expressed steel truss roof framing used on the existing hall was continued for the new entry awning and library, which visually ties together existing and new work. Supporting columns implore a strong visual element of the College symbol – “Southern Cross”. Visual games were played, with wall elements arranged like stacked books. The theme of bright colours found in the existing primary school was used and continued.
