Emerald Aquatic Centre 50m Pool

Fulton Trotter Architects were commissioned by the Central Highlands Regional Council in 2010 for the development of a new 50m x 25m Swimming Pool, Learn to Swim Pool, Swim Club, Control Room and Associated Plant Buildings at Emerald Aquatic Centre.
The forms of the new buildings reflect the style of the Café and Amenities Buildings with a blade wall lining the boundary with horizontal screening segments which puncture the blade, articulating the length of the wall. The roofs to the new buildings are simple skillions that float above the blade walls, falling towards the boundary to
reduce the scale at the street, whilst also shading the building from the afternoon sun.
The Swim Club Building includes an outdoor covered area to the east overlooking the 50m Pool. The roof to this space includes a visually dynamic screen to provide shading from the early morning sun and a constantly changing image for swimmers as they travel up and down the length of the pool. The screen when viewed from an acute angle appears to be a flat linear screen but as one moves closer to the building, the secondary battens appear and a wave pattern is revealed. Influenced by the wake that is made as a swimmer travels down the length of the pool, swimmers will be able to visually connect with the screen as breaths are taken between strokes.
In 2008 Fulton Trotter Architects won a Regional Commendation from the Australian Institute of Architects for the Cafe and Amenities that we did in 2007 on the site.
