Stella Maris College - Scholastica Building
As part of the College’s Master Plan, Fulton Trotter Architects undertook the design of the Stella Maris College Staff, Library and Science Building. Named Scholastica and spread across three levels, the building aims to strengthen an already robust learning environment, responsive to changing needs and the demands of the new Australian curriculum with a flexible and transparent layout. Fulton Trotter were involved in all stages of this project from concept design through construction to selection of soft furnishings.
The design is a reimagining of the existing Spanish Mission style school and convent, plus
a healthy dose of floating glass elements drawing on the school’s beachside location. This oceanic theme is continued inside, influencing colour palettes and furniture selections, and widespread use of glass throughout the library, science labs and numerous break-out spaces making learning visible. Spiralling through the centre of the building, the metalwork of the main staircase draws from the beloved fig trees in the centre of the school, while acoustic panels on the walls and ceilings echo the dappled light that filter through their leaves.
Fulton Trotter Architects have a long standing relationship with Stella Maris College, extending back to 2001 when the Master Plan process first began. We are very proud of the end results of this building and look forward to working on future stages with the college.
