St Philomena School
The school sits within a tranquil, leafy rural context. The site is large and even in its final form the school will fill a relatively small portion of the site. The design solution has been to keep the new school tightly clustered and to impose a formal order to the buildings which will stand in contrast to the natural setting of the site.
The planning layout of the buildings is defined by a purposeful order of internal courtyards. Entry to the school is by way of a welcoming public space, a large paved area that extends from the library and the covered assembly area creating a generous civic space. This will form the central nucleus of the new school. Extending from this central space on each side, the buildings are arranged into tightly controlled cloistered spaces. The school will gradually take the form of a ‘village’ of buildings with related functions clustered around a hierarchy of courtyards.
